The South and West Wilts is one of the oldest foxhound packs in England, founded by the 5th Lord Arundell in 1690.
The Hunt is particularly welcoming to visitors and has a reputation for being friendly and encouraging newcomers. The country is ideal for experienced riders, as well as for beginners of all ages, with plenty of easy options to cross the country. Most people wear traditional riding clothes, but newcomers are welcome to wear comfortable and tidy kit. Special rates are available for newcomers and can be arranged by contacting the Secretary.
There are many social events throughout the year, and everyone is encouraged to join the very strong Supporters Club. Hunting commences at the beginning of September and carries on until the end of March.
Hunting is conducted within the terms of the Hunting Act at all times.
If you want to experience the thrill of crossing wonderful country behind a pack of hounds, while feeling part of a friendly and welcoming crowd of people, contact the Hunt Secretary, Jeremy Cox at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The country lies in Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset between Wylye, Fovant, Shaftesbury, Shepton Mallet, Bath and Westbury.
Part of its attraction is that the landscape is very varied. There are two grass vales: the Knoyle Vale, mostly in Dorset; and the Witham Vale in Somerset. North of the A303 and south of the A30 is downland country, and there are three large woodland areas: Great Ridge north of the A303; Fonthill Abbey Woods; and Bradley Woods near Maiden Bradley.
The country is very well fenced throughout, with hedges and timber in the Vale country and timber elsewhere. There are also plenty of options for non-jumpers.
Hounds meet on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. A normal mounted field on a Saturday would consist of around 50 riders and during the week around 20.
Visitors & Subscribers
The SWW Hunt welcomes visitors and new subscribers, and if you have never been hunting with a pack of foxhounds before, your first day will be free.
If you would like to come hunting with us please email Jeremy Cox, the Hunt Secretary, at email@example.com, or telephone him on 01747 840325 so that he can let you know where we are meeting, where best to park, what day might suit you best and answer any other questions you may have.
We have a number of options, depending on whether you are:
• a complete newcomer
• a day visitor
• someone who would like to purchase a book of vouchers (which will give you 6 days hunting at a discounted price in the current season).
• someone who would like to take out a full subscription.
The costs of all options for the 2019/20 season are shown in the table below. We ask that full subscribers pay their subscriptions by 1st September and we encourage payment by direct debit.
Farmers are defined as those who derive all or a greater part of their income from a farm in SWW country where they live and/or work. Their rates, which are negotiable, also apply to their spouses/partners and their children.
Ages are as at 1st September.
Vouchers – A book of vouchers may only be bought once in a season. If you wish to hunt more frequently, we would expect you to become a subscriber.
